Nothing goes better with a braai than a side dish of pap – and that’s exactly what Cooking with Zanele is serving up with her exclusive Heritage Day recipe! Add your favourite meat, top it off with a dollop of tasty sauce, and you’ve got the perfect plate of South African flavour.

Find all the ingredients you need at your local Shoprite and make this Heritage Day feast one to remember!

Directions

1. Fire up your braai, fill a large pot with water, and bring it to a boil over the coals.

2. Add in the peas, sweetcorn, spring onion, and vegetable seasoning.

3. Using a whisk, gradually pour in maize into the water, and take the pot off the coals.

4. Stir the mixture every 4 minutes, adding butter to taste.

5. Cook your pap for 15 minutes, serve and enjoy!

  • 1 litre of boiling water
  • 2 cups of maize meal
  • 2 cups of fresh peas
  • 1 cup of sweetcorn
  • 3 tsp vegetable seasoning
  • 80g butter
  • Handful of finely chopped spring onion
